Atargatis is an Assyrian Godess that transformed herself into a mermaid out of shame for accidentally killing her human lover.
Living so close to two major oceans, one should at least paint one mermaid. I am not sure if she lives in the Gulf of Mexico and the Atlantic.
Ask divers and fisherman, they should be able to tell... :-)
